Margaritaville Tailgating Grill: An Honest Review From A Professional Tailgater

Posted on | August 30, 2010 | No Comments

With football season rapidly approaching, it becomes time to check out the required tailgating equipment list.

The food part is easy, you buy it new each time and rotate some of the primary items to avoid repetition. But, there are a few basics you’re going to bring to each tailgating party. A solid table that folds up is needed and most importantly a good tailgate grill that will cook a variety of different types of items.

You don’t want anything too heavy, bulky or hard to transport.

This year, in my never ending search for a quality grill that was easy to transport, I decided to try out the Margaritaville Tailgating Grill.

I must admit that the name of the grill caught my eye right from the start. What I immediately didn’t like about the grill was the cost.

While yes, I know that with a greater price usually comes greater quality; I didn’t know that I wanted to fork over $300-$400 on a grill that I carried to college football games.

Margaritaville Tailgating Grill:  Here’s What I Liked

So, I did my homework, I read up on the product and researched the reviews. Then, I received some “found” money for my birthday and I decided to give it a try.

Huge Cooking Area. From the pictures, you can’t really tell, but the size of the grill impressed me. It has about 350 square inches of cooking space which means I can get quite a few burgers or brats on there. It has 20,000 BTUs of heating power that would make Tim the Tool Man grunt with delight. My wife likes the push button ignition which makes start up easy.

Yes, It Really Mounts On Your Tailgate. One of the other cool features of the grill is that you can mount it on the back of the car and take off. It doesn’t have to get into the SUV or car and take up room. Now, I can have more room for riders and my decorations.

Three Year Warranty. It also came with a three year limited warranty, which is a good thing. I just hope I never have to use it.

Customize It With Your Team Colors. While this is probably not in the instruction manual, I thought it was cool that I could paint the lime green parts any color you want. Mine will soon be in my team colors of red and black.

The first time I used the grill, I pulled it off the back of the Jeep and set it up in no time. I got quite a few comments on the coolness of it, so that’s worth a few of the paid dollars in and of it’s self.

Here Is What I Didn’t Like About The Tailgating Grill

So, no it wasn’t perfect. But, then again, what is?

This Grill Is Expensive. I still think it was expensive. If I didn’t have the birthday money to spend at the time, I don’t know if I would have given in and gotten it. Granted, I’m glad I did, but it just hurt to spend that kind of money.

No Propane Tank. Another thing that miffed me was that it didn’t come with a propane tank. It takes a 1 pound tank and I kind of thought that should have been included.

Mounting Problems For Those With Rear Mounted Spares. Another issue I had was that it was kind of difficult to get the grill set up on the hitch because I had a rear mounted spare. There was hardly any clearance between the two.

What Others Are Saying About The Margaritaville Grill

Ok, I admit it, what people said about my grill made me feel good.

You know how close in those tailgating parties are and people wander around commenting about your food and set up. I had my Margaritaville Explorer Blender and my Tailgate Grill set up.  It is the perfect tailgator blender combination.  The one thing that I I constantly heard was how cool my grill was and where did I get it.

The things people commented on as being cool to them sometimes didn’t even occur to me. One passerby liked how the tailgate grill lid flipped back so that you didn’t have to remove it and find a place for it. That’s like my grill at home, so I didn’t think of it as being a plus.

But at tailgating parties, there’s very little room for the grill lids that have to come off.

The Margaritaville Tailgating Grill Gets Two Thumbs Up

Overall, this professional tailgater gives the Margaritaville Tailgating Grill two thumbs up.

It’s easy to put together, it cooks well and it looks cool. The bottom line is that it’s just a fun way to cook outdoors with a bit of flair.

Invest in the grill and have an even better time at the game, win or lose.
